The way we were able to be open extended hours this year was to have me come in an hour later than the other media specialist. That way I also stay an hour later and can keep the library open an hour longer. Most days I have kids in here for the entire hour. lm Lynette (LYNN) Mitchell Library Media Specialist Crystal River High School 1205 NE 8th Ave. Crystal River, Florida 34428 mitchelll@citrus.k12.fl.us 352-795-4641 ext: 248 352-795-4519 FAX PRIVILEGED AND CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION: The information contained in this electronic transmission, and any documents attached hereto, may contain confidential information that is legally privileged and confidential. A few librarians get extended contract pay through the stateıs (now defunct) career ladder program to work an additional 70 hours throughout the year which pays them to open early or stay late for those 70 hours, but that is all. Unless systems want to hire additional staff, or pay librarians to work longer hours and extended days, it wonıt change. Everyone agrees that it would be useful to open libraries extended hours, but no one wants to pay the price:) Laurie -- Laurie Butler, Specialist Department of Instruction, Libraries and Textbooks Shelby County Schools Memphis, Tennessee 901-321-2630, Central Office 901-321-2207, Textbook Office, SCS Warehouse lbutler@scsk12.org Shelby County Schools offers educational and employment opportunities without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, or disability. A Staten Island, New York reporter takes a look at why school libraries close their doors to children at the end of the school day, precisely when they need to keep their doors open so that kids can do their homework, and of course, research for their assignments. Like all things, its a budget matter, and in New York, a political matter. Is it like this around the country as well? http://www.silive.com/news/index.ssf/2007/11/bankers_hours_at_school_librar. html _________________________ Patricia Sarles, MA, MLS Passages Academy Libraries 941 Rev.
