HIT: Books for Girlšs Group

I heard Emily Lockhart speak at a librarians conference and she was truly
awesome.

She writes very girl-friendly books on poignant topics that teen girls go
through. I think you should check her out. I think she is perfect for your
teen/pre-teen girls.

The other title I suggest is The Night Tourist by Katherine Marsh. I heard
her speak as well and her book is clean and being optioned for a movie.

****
Halfway to the Sky, the story of a girl running away from home. She has a
small crush on a boy that she meets on the trail (VERY innocent) and
eventually experiences his rejection.

Ruby Holler, The story of orphaned twins finding a home with an older
couple. Everyone I have recommended this to has loved it! There are many
potential story extensions and discussions.
 ****
Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen is a great book!
 ******
Princess Academy by Hale
Shakespeare's Secret by Broach
The Day Joanie Frankenhauser Became a Boy by Lantz
Double Identity by Haddix
Listening for Lions by Whelan
Uglies by Westerfeld
East by Pattou
Hattie Big Sky by Larson
 ****
Listening for Lions would be good.
 ****
Perfect by Natasha Friend is an easy read where the main character has
bulimia.
Our 6th graders love it.
****
Queen Bees and Wannabes is a great nonfiction book for girls this age and
up. I know adult women who could read it and learn. :-D

Avalon High by Meg Cabot
Double Identity by Margaret Haddix
The Misadventures of Maude March by Audrey Couloumbis
****
Listening for Lions by Gloria Whelen (received a starred review as well)
 ****

Just this morning I overheard one of my voracious readers
booktalking Bloomability by Creech to another like-minded soul. So I

added it to my mental To Be Read List. You might check it out!

Some popular titles among girls of that age group at my school are:
The Girls by Amy Goldman Koss
Blister by Susan Shreve
Ida B. and her plans... by Hannigan
Twelve by Lauren Myracle
 ****
I am on the board of our municipal library and have sat in for the
librarian in her mother: daughter book club, some of their favorite
titles include:

The Midwife's Apprentice and Esperanza Rising
 ****
Olive's Ocean by Kevin Henkes is incredible! We used it for a 6th grade
Mother/Daughter book club with great results. The girls also loved the book
Shug, but I forget the author. Both have incidents that will get teh girls
talking, that's for sure, but aren't too risque'.

I think both of these would work. They are both so popular in my library,
that I've had to get 5-6 copies of each. Very enjoyable reads with lots of
topics for discussion.
 ****

Define "Normal" by Julie Anne Peters

If I have a Wicked Stepmother, Where is My Prince Charming? by Melissa
Kantor

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares

Catherine, Called Birdie by Karen Cushman

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine

The Wedding Planner's Daughter by Colleen Paratore
 ****

There is a Girls' Guides series by Rosen that would work well for your
group. There are twelve volumes. I also have a list called Females Rule!
of fiction that have especially engaging female protagonists. I can send
you that as an attachment if you like.
 ****

A few that come to mind:

Holding Up the Earth
Together Apart
Just Ask Iris
All Alone in the Universe
Our Only May Amelia

I especially like Holding Up the Earth...such a powerful, affirmingmessage!

***
I think it would be fun to do activities from The Daring Book for Girls by
Andrea Buchanan. It's a takeoff on The Dangerous Book for Boys.
 ****
I'd Tell You I Love You But Then I'd Have to Kill You (awesome)
Life as We Knew It
Becoming Naomi Leon
The Girls by Amy Koss
