Summary of my original question: I'm looking for the very best Native
American folklore to beef up overall and looking for 3rd grade appropriate
(both for read aloud and independent reading) folklore of the Plain and
Northwest Native Americans.

The responses I got:

Just off the top of my head I would suggest books by Bruchac and Paul Goble
(for the plains).

Joseph Bruchac is a fantastic author. You may want to begin by getting some
of his titles.

Debbie Reese, a Nambe Pueblo Indian woman, is a frequent LM-NET

contributor-- you will probably hear from her with your question. Just in
case though, you can read her blog and list of recommended books for
teaching about Native peoples.

She also wrote an excellent post for the ALSC blog, which might interest

Go to Debbie Reese's web page first. Debbie posts to LM_NET.

Go to Oyate to find folklore that is genuine. I plan to buy from
recommendations from Oyate when I have money again to spend.

How Rabbit Tricked Otter: A Cherokee Trickster Tale by Gale Ross.

The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush by Tomie DePaola

In Montana, we have a Constitutional requirement to teach Indian Education
