Research Pre-Assessment Thank you all for your responses to my request. ORIGINAL REQUEST Basically, I am looking for some sort of pre-assessment of research skills for 9th graders. I want to have a better picture of where kids are with their skills. Actually, I need 2 things: 1. Because of time contraints, some kind of "quick and dirty" pencil and paper survey that could be completed by students in about 15 minutes. 2. A more detailed survey or activity that I could use next year before we jump into teaching the research process. RESPONSES: All the responses will be very useful- both for the near term and the future. I have found several good ideas. Maury Brown and I have had an interesting conversation & I have ended up adapting Maury's quiz. Both are now posted on the LM_NET wiki at: http://lmnet.wikispaces.com/Documents I will be exploring the other ideas in the (hopefully) near future. Most frequently suggested: The TRAILS site. http://trails-9.org/index.php?page=home ----------------- More info about trails: certainly you should look into the TRAILS Assessment for 9's. It's done entirely online (kids have an access code) and gives you a very helpful printout of how the group does on different literacy skills. http://www.trails9.org Everything you need to register (free) and set up to have a class or classes take the test is right there. just work your way through the site. This was developed several years ago at Kent State and is extremely informative. They are now field testing a middle school version, I think, but I have used this one for 8s prior to instructing them as they got ready for their first real paper. ----------------- Why don't you create a blank flow chart and ask students to write down the step-by-step process they normally use when doing this kind of work? ----------------- Have you seen this issue? http://www.ala.org/ala/aasl/aaslpubsandjournals/kqweb/kqweb.cfm - a good chuck of the print is there, and my column might help.
