I am sorry it took so long, but here are the suggestions of books to use to teach
metaphors that I requested for a new 4th grade teacher:

The Bluebonnet nominee from a few years ago Toasting Marshmallows: Camp Poems has
some in the poems. "The Tent" and the Sleeping Bag poems come to mind off hand.

It would work as a longer read-together, but The Search for Delicious by Natalie
Babbitt is full of delicious metaphors. You can also use it for lessons on
propaganda, bias, etc.

"It Figures!: Fun Figures of Speech by Marvin Terban

Metaphors, Similes, And Other Word Pictures in Picture Books
The Wagon [and others by this author] Tony Johnston
The Man Who Called Down Owls Eve Bunting
The Night Before Christmas Moore, Clement.
  The Bicycle Man Allen Say
Hide and Seek Fog Alvin Tresselt
Quick as a Cricket Wood, Audrey.
Seven Blind Mice Young, Ed. (398.2 YOL)
Color Me a Rhyme Jane Yolen (811 YOL)
Let’s Get a Pup! Said Kate Bob Graham
The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses Paul Goble (398.2 GOB)
Chanticleer and the fox Barbara Cooney
  Owl Moon; Encounter Jane Yolen
  Come on, Rain Karen Hesse
Knots on a Counting Rope Bill Martin
Flossie and the Fox Pat McKissack
Night of the Twisters Ivy Ruckman
  The Talking Eggs San Souci
Sam and the Tigers Julius Lester

You can find lists in the LM Net Archives and in the Judy Freeman books, but one
of my favorites (especially for this time of year) is In November by Cynthia
Rylant. Beautiful illustrations and the writing is like poetry--full of metaphors.

After consulting with the book, Using Picture books to teach literary
devices, these are the ones that I am familiar with:

Come on, Rain! by Karen Hesse
River Friendly, River Wild by Jane Kurtz
Black Cat by Christopher Myers
The Little Island by Golden MacDonald
Tar Beach by Fairth Ringgold
The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter
White Snow, Bright Snow by Alvin Tresselt
Owl Moon by Jane Yolen
The Lady and the Spider by Faith McNulty
Knots on a Counting Rope by Bill Martin

Grandfather's Lovesong by Reeve Lindbergh ; illustrated by Rachel
Isadora.
