LM-Netters, Thanks for your time. What would I do without your help and support? People who responded did not think the book too intense for a 5th grader. I do not know this student well because this is the first year here. Yes, the classroom teacher made a judgement call, and yes, I mentioned RIF's guidelines. Teacher's mind was made up, partly because of her daughter's experience with the book. Apparently, the daughter was upset. Well, it was an upsetting time as most novels, memoirs, biographies and histories verify. Anyway, I feel validated that the book would have been just fine. When I taught 5th grade we read it along with several other stories and nonfiction, but it was also discussed in class. Perhaps that was what the teacher was worried about. Reading in isolation.
