Dear Listers, As promised here's a hit of recommendations and advice regarding the purchase of thin clients and laptops for each teacher. Thanks to all who kindly replied. Based on these responses and other factors we have decided to forgo the thin client. We have also decided to go forward with a purchase plan for a laptop for each teacher. What are the down-sides? If you have anything to share I would be most grateful. Our business manager is looking into purchasing thin client computers and would like any information from current users. Additionally assigning each teacher a laptop is another plan we are considering. If you have any experience with how this works or doesn't please let me know. We're looking for the good and the bad. Mitzi Thomas mthomas@gsjax.org the Greenwood School Jacksonville, FL 32225 Hello Mitzi, I never thought I would hear the words "Thin Client" again. Our previous tech department instituted thin client in our middle school computer labs leading everyone to believe that it would save the district money. The system never worked. The computer lab teachers couldn't do anything for almost 2 weeks. Needless to say....thin client went away real quick! Good luck, if you get it and I hope it works, because it didn't work in our school. Janis Thomas Librarian Chichester Middle School Chichester School District one thing we learned when teachers were suddenly provided with thin clients... Make sure everyone is provided with and shown how to use a flash drive. Teachers used to be able to save stuff to a floppy, with thin clients, there is no floppy drive. Regarding thin client - one of my schools is using Citrix thin client for the PCs that the students use, and frankly, because we don't have an onsite tech person I don't like it much. When there is a problem related to printing or something else, it seems to affect all of the machines. Also, the windows seem a little hard to get used to - I can't really put my finger on it, but it just isn't too impressive. Regarding teacher laptops, I've run one laptop for teachers program where the teachers applied and we had a certain number to give away. They had to say how they'd use it in the classroom. If they were selected, they were required to attend two days of training. We gave them a laptop, a case and a printer (they could bring home the printer if they wanted to). My school now has a rotation program every three or four years where each division (Lower, Middle and Upper) can trade in for a new machine. It looks like you're in an independent school? If so, the ISED email list has a lot of tech people on it at independent schools. It would be a good list to join and a good one to post your question to. Michelle -- Michelle S.
