In our K-4 elementary school there is little to no professional development for the library media specialist so I depend on this group for support and advice. Until recently our teachers have relied on me to find and deliver books to them because the previous LMS provided that service. In September every teacher had the collection database installed on their computers so they can access the collection from their classroom. On a case- by- case basis I am instructing them how to use it. I have not had a great deal of success. My question is this: How do you service your teachers when they request resources from the library? Do you find and deliver the books for them? Do you deliver them to the classroom? Do you put books in their box? Or do your teachers do the searching, selecting and finding themselves? How much lead time do you ask of them to identify resources? I am happy to put together bibliographies on subjects and have done so in the past - so often they are ignored, it's frustrating! How do you handle it when teachers drop by in the morning and want 'a good story to read aloud this afternoon?' Or 'when you get a moment, could you find a book on the water cycle for me?' (and that is when they are passing by the library on their way to somewhere else!) I want to be helpful and a team player. I don't want teachers feeling that I am difficult or unwilling to service their needs. However I feel that I should be a resource not a gopher. How do you handle these issues? Kate Summerlin LMS A.W.
