Several of you asked for a HIT, so here is a summary of what I learned.

First of all, many of you teach note taking in your school system, generally in
middle school. This is done either by the librarian or by the English teacher (the
split is about 50-50), with science or history teachers sometimes chiming in.

"If you go to http://www.big6.com you will find several very good lesson plans for
note-taking. I am in a middle school and we're hearing from the high school folks
that the kids are coming to them without these necessary skills. IMHO it's
important to teach note-taking because they can't cut-and-paste or tape-record
everything they're going to need to complete a proper research project. HTH"

One person mentioned that college professors sometimes prohibit the use of tape
recorders except for documented medical needs, but others (some of whom ARE college
professors) said that the profs don't mind. I suspect that this may have more to do
with the personality of the professor than anything else.

Overall, it would appear that this is still a necessary skill, and that we are
teaching it somewhere along the line, although not always in the best possible
place.
