We recently hosted our first author visit at our HS. What a fantastic experience
for our students. I wanted to share this with the group to encourage others to try
this if you haven't yet.

Author Philip Beard spent 2 hours talking with our book group members discussing
writing, publishing and his book DEAR ZOE, which the students read. He answered
their questions, gave them ideas, prodded them to give criticisms of his book and
made sure he addressed them as young adults. Since his visit, he has even read
manuscripts given to him by our students and sent advice to individual students via
email. Giving students the chance to interact with the creator of a work is a rare
and worthy gift.

DEAR ZOE was named Ten Best First Novels of 2005 by Booklist. Set in Pittsburgh in
2001, the novel tells how a family tries to heal after the death of the youngest
child. The books is narrated by fifteen-year-old Tess. We asked our club members
to read the book before he came. Some of my more reluctant readers were hooked and
are now converts! The book was also a Borders selection and a Book Sense
selection. The website outlines more: http://www.philipbeard.net/

Did I mention he did this for nothing? Ok, we did feed him a sandwich with some
chips. (He ate lunch with the kids because that's part of our lunch book program)

I was hesitant to do a program because I didn't know how the chemistry would be
between HS students and an author (I love my kids but would he?), but we all now
agree it was one of the best things we have done. I highly recommend Mr. Beard as a
speaker.
