I definitely don't think it is appropriate to "look the other way" just because I don't agree with a policy. As someone else mentioned, how can we as librarians be adamant about things like copyright and then not enforce school policy? That said, I can't really say that I am against this policy. Sure, there are some good uses for social networking, and when we want to make use of that tool, it's a simple thing to tell the tech people that we need the filter dropped from a particular site. But trying to keep kids on educational tasks when they want to be continuously checking MySpace is a waste of my time. They can check MySpace somewhere else. I really don't think it hurts their educational development to be denied this at school. As for going around the filter with a proxy site, we have had plenty of issues in the past with students going to inappropriate sites, so our technology department has cracked down. This doesn't bother me a bit. Since the crack down, I haven't, for example, had a problem with unsavory things coming off our printers. I haven't had students wasting time chatting. I haven't seen any girls get into fights over postings on their personal pages. The filters, after all, are not just to keep kids off from MySpace. And I'm not sure I agree that MySpace isn't hurting anyone. Used excessivley in a school setting, I think it does.
