Margaret Peterson Haddix's books have become quite popular here, so my
spring book order included quite a few of her books. That order arrived
just before school got out, so the books weren't circulated much then,
but one of those books has gone out twice in September. It came back
today, obviously damaged by an overcrowded (or unorganized) locker. I
asked the student about it, and got the explanation that it had, indeed,
been damaged in the locker. When I mentioned paying for the book, the
student was surprised, since the book can still be read. I explained
that the book was new, and that it would have to be replaced. I gave the
student the price, and said that when the money came in I would give her
the book. She accepted that, but I don't think she was happy.

Just in case someone fusses, what do others do?
