Thanks to all who responded to my query about elementary *car* books. Below is my original query: ***I teach in a K-5 school, and I have had several students (nearly all boys) ask for "car" books. I am aware that I haven't done much to provide for this particular interest. (I confess that I know nothing about the topic and don't have much interest myself, so this is largely my fault.) We need both everybody books and middle-upper elementary levels. Race cars and sports cars seem to be the most commonly requested types, with monster trucks also high on the list. Photography is highly preferred over drawings. Here's my qualifier, though... I don't want one of those series where each book is 16 pages long, about only one type of car, and costs $15... and there are 57 books in the series. (Series like that are one of my pet peeves, but that thread is over so I won't go down that path.) I want to get fewer than 5 comprehensive books that will satisfy my students' desire without spending a healthy chunk of my budget on books that don't meet my state requirements. Suggestions?*** Unfortunately, I got very few specific suggestions of the type of book I was looking for. Several people suggested using the search engines provided by book companies. While I appreciate the idea (and have used it), I was looking for precise titles that have already proved to be hits in other libraries. Several people also emphasized the importance of reading material for boys. I*m very aware of this topic, having taken several workshops on the subject, but I*m constrained by my budget and cannot simply drop several hundred dollars in this area in the next week or two. If you can, I envy you. Other folks suggested series that sound good, but definitely fit into the *32 pages for $17 and each book on one type of car* category. (This is all the more annoying as these books frequently turn up damaged* or don*t turn up at all.) That said, here are the three suggestions I received: * Rouke Publishers used to have a Classic Car Series that would be terrific for this. About 48 pages, lots of cool pictures and just about the right reading level for your car crazies. I use them with my ELL and SpEd kids at HS * try some of the DK Eyewitness books -- like the one simply called "CAR" * I do have one hugely popular monster truck book to suggest...Monster Jam: The Amazing Guide (published by DK). Thanks to everyone who offered a suggestion or an opinion!
