Below is the response that I sent to Lynette concerning the defense of Go Ask
Alice in her challenged situation.? I think that I have written about the two
publications by ALA before, but it bears repeating in view of Lynette's challenge
and Banned Books Week.? Two indispensable resources for challenged books are the
two slim volumes published in 2002 by ALA, Hit List for Young Adults 2: Frequently
Challenged Books and Hit List for Children 2: Frequently Challenged Books.? The
Young Adult volume contains 20 most challenged books, including for each book a
synopsis, list of articles concerning that particular book, awards and prizes for
the book, a history of its challenges and outcomes of those challenges, Internet
connection(s), books on the author or book, other resources (such as videos or
films), and reviews.? The Young Adult volume has a foreword by Chris Crutcher and
appendixes that include "Resources Recommending Challenged Books," "Tips for
Dealing with Censorship a!
nd Selection,"? "How to Write a Book Rationale," "Library Bill of Rights,"
"Internet Guides to Intellectual Freedom," and "The Freedom to Read."? The
Children's volume contains 24 challenged books and an appendix entitled "What ALA
Can Do to Help Librarians Combat Censorship."? While there are many excellent
resources for librarians and all educators to retain on their shelves to help
combat censorship, these two compact resources will definitely prove invaluable.

Hi Lynette,
The ALA publication Hit List for Young Adults 2, Frequently Challenged Books
features Go Ask Alice as one of its most challenged books and discusses its
challenged history and list of resources for its rationalization.? You probably
have this information, but I'm sending it just in case there's anything useful.?
The awards and prizes for Go Ask Alice include the following: Best of the Best
Books for Young Adults, 1970-1983; Christopher Book Award, 1972; Media and Methods
Maxi Award for Best Paperback, 1973; 100 All-Star Choices for Teens, 2000; Popular
Paperbacks, YALSA, 2000; Still Alive, The Best of the Best Books for Young Adults,
1960-1974.? The reviews listed for Go Ask Alice are as follows:

Go Ask Alice is being challenged at my high school. We have the process
in place and the parents are definitely going through the process. They
tried skipping it and went straight to the superintendent, but we held
firm that the process must be followed.

I have found that there are reviews for this material, but I cannot find
the reviews. Can anyone point me in the right direction so can print
out copies of the reviews to take to the meeting tonight at 4pm?
THANKS in advance.
