Can anyone comment on the appropriateness of Walter Dean Myers' Handbook for Boys for a third grader? I did not purchase the book, and have not yet read it (I'm in the process of doing that now) but a parent has raised concerns (not a formal challenge.) We're in a PS-6 building, and I suspect that it was originally purchased with the fifth and sixth graders in mind. I'd love to have some input from those who have read the book. Also, if your library restricts certain books to specific grade levels based on content, do you do so only after a formal challenge process? Many thanks!
