Here are several of the ideas that I recieved for the book care pledge. Thank you to everyone that send my suggestions. I ended up taking several of them and putting them all together. Also, thank you to everyone that sent me samples of letters and pledges to use. "I promise to treat books with care and return them on time for others to share." :) My old media specialist introduced this promise to the kindergarteners before they could check out books, and had the kids raise their right hand and repeat the pledge before leaving the media center every time they came in for book exchange. I wrote my own: the children stand "hugging" their books next to their heart and repeat: I promise to treat this book as if it were my very own. We did this after we talked about "book enemies" like glue, crayons, food, dirty hands, scissors, tape, etc. and the children would always wait to do this before their teacher picked them up from my class. I think that there are skills books that have something like that in them. I am specifically thinking of "Mr. Wiggle" but I have seen it in others. Book Pledge I promise to treat our books with care, To return them neat, For others to share. I¹ll keep them dry, When outside is wet, I¹ll keep them high, away from my pet. I¹ll read them and return them As soon as I am done; For you to borrow, tomorrow, And have a lot of fun!
