Thanks to all who responded with great ideas about attendance incentives for an off site Book Fair for the library. I have plans to hold a drawing for a portable dvd player. Any student who comes to the fair is eligible to win. The drawing will take place on our closed circuit news show the next Monday morning. Our activities for the day include; 3, 4th and 5th grade Readings of their own stories, 3 costume contests, 4th & 5th grade Readers Theater, gargoyle decorating (paper sacks with goodies -ordered from Oriental Trading) and bookmark making. Listed below are your suggestions for which I am so grateful!! We have a book fair the Saturday before Thanksgiving at Barnes and Noble. It is Children's book week - so we also hand out book marks with reading suggestions that week - a mix of older and newer titles. At the fair our forensics students perform (although last year it was a little early for them and they might not do it this year) and our middle school choir performs. We have also had teachers tell stories. I might also have the band (in smaller groups) perform. We get a pretty good turn out - although last year was smaller in terms of profit (I think the store might not have been giving out vouchers at the registers as enthusiastically as they had in the past) Have a prize (large stuffed animal, new book title) and use a free-raffle (put name in box and if your name is pulled out, you win...just for showing up) How about a Teddy Bear Parade. Ask your local Scholastic warehouse if you can rent their Pooh Bear costume. Read Bear stories. Or come dressed as your favorite real life hero. Have the Off duty firemen, police, EMT, DR, nurses, etc etc come and read hero stories One year I had a "decorated" pumpkin show. Students were invited to "decorate" a pumpkin like a book character. They glued things on, painted, etc., but NO cutting! They also filled out a card stating who the character is, and what book the character is from. NO tv or movie characters were accepted. Entrants received a small treat. This was well received; the only problem arose when students left their pumpkins in the library too long and they rotted seeping pumpkin ooze. Give students a coupon to fill in their names and to drop into a bucket at the store, for some kind of giveaway. In San Antonio, I would probably offer a season pass to either Sea World or Fiesta Texas (about $50 -60 value). Maybe some store would donate a bike, etc., to give away.
