Thank you to the many people who responded to my question of how far
library stacks need to be from each other in order to meet ADA
requirements. It seems the bare minimum amount of space is 36 inches,
though many commented that in reality, that is not enough space for a
wheelchair to maneuver. Apparently 42 inches is recommended as the true
functional minimum (they just couldn't get that passed as the legal
minimum); others recommended at least 4 feet.

A few people sent along this website, which is fairly helpful (though kind
of tricky to decode): http://www.usdoj.gov/crt/ada/reg3a.html#Anchor-43266

Unfortunately, when we tried to space our shelves 38" apart, we fell short
of floor space by more than an entire row of shelves! We're not sure what
exactly the discrepancy was between the plan the furniture people put
together and the actual room, but we've had to do some rearranging! We
ended up with shelves from 38-42" apart, though, so that's good.

Thanks again to everyone for their help!
