I just can't help adding something to today's discussion about The Golden Compass, so please bear with me! I have only read the first book of the "Dark Materials" trilogy, and admit to "skimming" the last chapters, as I was starting to find it tiresome with its long quest for the esoteric secret of "Dust", which I now see extends through two more installments. I can find plenty of real dust right here in my library, and all of it's from stars, from what I hear. My biggest objection to The Golden Compass is how it singles out and offends a specific group I belong to: the Roman Catholic Church. After showing his ability to ably create for us a whole fantasy universe, Mr. Pullman chooses not to use original terminology for his evil and opressive religious hierarchy, using instead "priests", "bishops", "Pope", "Papacy", and just in case we didn't get it, even "Vatican Council". Am I being overly sensitive? If he had named the sinister religious hoodlums "rabbis" or "imams", would people be just as complacent about it? I have not removed this book from my library, and don't intend to, but I will seriously think about purchasing an interesting book I read recently:The New Anti-Catholicism: The Last Acceptable Prejudice, by Philip Jenkins, a very well-respected author. Best wishes to all, Lorrie Quesada, Librarian MARIAN BAKER SCHOOL Ph.
