Hi, I immensely enjoyed the "His Dark Materials"; I think one of the reasons we haven't heard a lot about Pullman is because he published first in his native UK, and his books are a little more literary than, I daresay, J.K. Rowling. While Pullman is vocal in his criticism of organized religion, I think his writing works on a metaphorical level as well; his criticism of the Church can be applied to any other dogma. In fact, I think he's skeptical of science too. BTW, I think the Daemon is representative of the soul; the ancient Greeks interpreted it as "divine power"- Plato associated it with wisdom. Remember, in the books, the daemons are very intuitive, and people really suffer when separated from them. I don't think that would be the case if they were evil. http://www.philip-pullman.com/pages/content/index.asp?PageID=12 My 2 cents!
