Thanks to all who helped me with the following question!  Below it are the
answers I received:  

 

I am looking at doing some innovative rearranging of our library, and would
like to know if anyone has tried interfiling videos with books, using the
Dewey or author call numbers. It sounds a little strange, I know, but it
might be different and stimulating (?) Any experiences out there? I will
post hits if I get some good feedback. Thanks to all.

I do - sort of.

 

I don't check videos out to students, so all videos are in the PRO
collection. I've divided that collection into two parts. The videos that are
going to be used in class are out in the main part of the library. 

Those for professional development are shelved with the professional
development books in the back room. That way a teacher can send a student to
get the "Maria" art video, and I can point them to the right shelf. The
stuff in the back room is what only a teacher will want, and they want to
pick it out themselves. The reason it is in the back is just a space issue,
not because I'm trying to segregate anything.

 

There are no real problems in that section, other than once in a while a dvd
will crawl behind some of the books. I have my aide check those shelves
every couple of weeks to see what is trying to hide.

I don't think it's strange at all! And yes, I have had the exact idea and
think it's great. I've intershelved all my reference with my circulating
collection and it's worked out fantastically. I just never got around to
doing the same with my visual media.

 

Multi-volumes still get shelved with my circulation collection.

 

And yes, in a busy school library, who has time to run back and forth
between sections to help a child. This way it is one-stop shopping! It's
worked great for me for the last 11 years.

Hi,
I did that with some audio/CD books.  They were packaged in slim boxes and I
shelved them right next to the print book version.  I would do that with any
media you're allowing students to check out that can be shelved.

I did that about 30 years ago in a large public high school. It made sense
to me and everyone seemed to like it. What it also did sadly was to screw up
the shelves - tall ones, short ones, various sizes. The problem was media of
various sizes, such as kits. 

Everything was arranged by Dewey and made assignments a breeze.

I think it would work better today as we mostly have DVDs, CD-ROMS, and VHS.

I saw this once in another library and thought it was a GREAT idea. However,
when I tried it my library, it was not as great as I thought. For one thing,
the videos kept falling off the shelves when kids pulled out the books. The
other thing was that often times people come in specifically looking for a
video, and it was very hard to find them then. So I moved them back to their
own section.

I shelve videos/dvds separately as they are used exclusively in the
classroom as part of the curriculum. However, I do shelve my audio books
alonside books and usually the kids check out both. I have recently added
Playaways and have had success with them. I'm hoping they will be less
maintenance than cds or tapes and easier to use.
