Dear Everyone,

Last year, I joined a school committee working on ways of improving the 9th grade
transition to high school. One of the new activities for 9th graders this year
will be an 20 minute advisory every day. At my insistence, one day a week of our
"Freshman Forum" will be a reading day. Since it will only be 20 minutes a week,
I have urged the nine teachers leading the Forums to read aloud to the students.
To make things easier for these teachers, I spend a lot of time this summer reading
short stories and writing summaries of stories that I thought would be suitable to
read to 9th graders. I have ordered the collections not currently owned by my
library.

After attending a Library 2.0 workshop over the summer, I created a Books to Read
blog http://joanneshawhan.wordpress.com/ containing my story summaries. Please
send me the names of other good short story collections. I will be continuing to
add to my short story lists. I also intend to use the blog for other kinds of book
lists during the year. I thought it was pretty cool to be creating a book blog and
not a lot of work.

Joanne
