Hi Corie, I work in a special needs school with primarily autistic children. I am actually in the process of writing an article which will discuss working with children with autism within a library setting. What are the ages of your students? I would recommend reading books that do not include any idioms or anything that is open to too much interpretation. I read a lot of books with rhymes that include repetition such as Chicka Chicka boom Boom, etc. It is important that the books you choose have illustrations that are not too abstract or interpretive. The students I work with love music and anything sing song. I often start my library sessions with a song or finger play. I would say that the area where you are telling the stories should be free from distractions (not facing a doorway, window, etc.) and not have too many over stimulating posters and pictures in the vicinity. Children with autism are easily over stimulated and you want to make sure that they are able to focus on you. I would also recommend creating a picture schedule that shows that students exactly what to expect when they visit the library. Show them that when they come to the library, they will sit down, listen to a story, pick out one book, etc. etc. If you have any other specific questions please let me know. This is my second year doing what I am doing and at times it is frustrating and overwhelming, but for the most part it is rewarding and I love it. I have a class of at least 8 autistic children with aides that come to the library together once a week. I do not know what I should read them or how I need to act. Can someone give me book titles, lessons, or any other ideas on how to make their library class productive?
