Rules by Cynthia Lord. Unabridged Audiobook. 4 CDs. Recorded Books, 2007. C4154 Perhaps you have read and loved Cynthia Lord's Newbery Honor winning middle grade novel, Rules, which tells the story of twelve-year-old Catherine, older sister to an autistic younger brother, David, a girl in search of a new friend, her place in the pre-teen social hierarchy, and, in the end, herself. You will, however, have a new, and perhaps even deeper, reading experience when you listen to Jessica Almasy's masterful delivery of this deeply affecting novel. Both David, with his stiff and sometimes halting delivery, and Jason, a paraplegic boy who speaks using only a communication board, require special techniques to bring the characters and their unique speech to life. Almasy accomplishes this superbly while also nailing the annoyingly loud and chirpy voice of Jason's "Speech Woman" and the subtle nuances of the often frustrated and sometimes inauthentic-sounding adults in the story. Best of all, she is perfect in the first-person reading of Catherine, tangled in her new friendship with Jason, a relationship that brings her face-to-face with her personal feelings about her brother's differences and her own role in relationship to differently-abled people. This is a must-have addition to your audio collection! Available from Recorded Books or as an audio download from Audible.com.
