Personally (and professionally), I would appreciate a time when teachers stop worrying about how much "free time" they perceive the librarian to have during the school day. I have seen this happen over and over again in (usually) elementary schools when the teachers, who usually have planning periods and conference times (unlike the librarian who runs kids through every hour), believe that any time the librarian is not working with a child must be "free time" and should be filled with extra responsibilities. Administrators at this level should remind these educators to stay focused on their own responsibilities and duties, and stop behaving like the children they supervise by "tattling" on librarians who they believe aren't supporting their own weight in the library. There's a lot more involved in being a librarian that what is seen by the classroom teacher who drops her students at the library's doorway...any elementary teacher who wishes to take on this responsibility is more than welcomed to enter the profession and discover the realm of instructional, administrative, and clerical duties that await them once storytime is over. In the meantime, I advise that an administrator, teacher, or other whining adult who doesn't understand what a librarian does throughout the day, take the time to "shadow" the professional within his / her school to gain a better perspective of the program. It just might surprise them! My two cents...spend them wisely. ~Shonda -- Shonda Brisco, MLIS Library Media / Technology Specialist Digital Bookends wiki / blog: http://digitalbookends.pbwiki.com http://shonda.edublogs.org/ sbrisco@gmail.com Resources for Texas School Librarians: http://txschoollibrarians.ning.com/ http://txschoollibrarians.wikispaces.com/ "Digital Resources" columnist School Library Journal -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
