I am in my second year as a library media specialist at a small 7th I am in my second year as a library media specialist at a small 7th-12th grade school and as sponsor of the book club. We have two sections of the club that meet during lunch once a week. Last year, participation in the discussion went fairly well until May, when none of the students in one of the sections read the selected book. I chalked that up to end-of-the year restlessness and we ended meetings for the year. This year I gave the students a choice between having a book chat club, where we read different things and share or selecting one title that we all read and discuss. The students were outspoken about selecting one title. We chose Wolf Rider which is divided into five parts. They agreed to read one part each week. The first discussion of the book went poorly. The meeting started late because of lunch schedule problems. Only a few members participated. Two of the students gave long-winded answers that drew very little from the book. They sounded as if they had only read a few pages, but were trying to sound as if they had read more. During our next meeting, the students admitted that none of them had read part 2.We had about 12 students in attendance. They said they were too busy with homework and extracurricular activities to have time to read. Another problem is that our meetings are often too loud and too disorderly. Everyone starts talking at once and I have to quiet them down several times. I also have to ask students to stop private conversations among themselves during the meeting. I want to make changes to improve our book club. What changes do you suggest? I will be happy to post a summary of hits without including e-mail addresses.
