Hello, I am a new MLS grad in my first job at a private school library. We have PreK - 5th, are using CASPR Library World Silver automation system and have approximately 11,000 books in the library collection. The reports that I ran on the inventory when I took over this summer revealed a great number of circulation record problems such as hundreds of books still checked out which were actually on shelf, etc. I requested that the prior practice of student self check out in the automation system stop. I have been under pressure from the staff to get the students checking out their own books again as soon as possible. I don't see how having 200 children accessing the circulation database can possibly result in accurate records. I would appreciate feedback from others as to their practice with regard to students using their library automation system. If you do I am curious how do you maintain accurate records? If you don't I am would like to know how you worked through this with staff.
