I had a number of responses to my questions about establishing an adult
lending library in the teachers' lounge. Most had a very informal situation
with little or no record keeping and no follow up. Here are three that
represent the group that responded. Thank you to everyone for sharing your
expertise and saving me a headache down the road.

1. We check out the "old way." I put a pocket on the inside cover with a
file card inside with the title/author on it. Teachers check out by
removing the card, signing it, and placing it in a 3x5 file box. When they
bring the book back, they pull the card, put it back in the pocket and
reshelve it.

2. I try to read the ABC shelves every other week.

3. Anyone can participate, you don't have to donate books to check them out.

4. We tell teachers that any book they add to the ABC library should be
considered 'donated.' If they ever want it back, they are welcome to take
it in the condition it is in if we still have it in the collection.

5. Everything is done on the honor system...so if a book is not returned, I
am not going to ask you for it. However, for a couple of titles teachers
have looked to see who had the book and went to that person and told them
they wanted it next. :)

We have an informal faculty lending library that we keep in our workroom.
Everything is run on the honor system. We purchase some of the books with
library funds (Our Admin kindly supports the concept) and many teachers also
contribute books.

1) We maintain a simple running list in Excel of all the books that we
should currently have.

2) We also have books on CD which as been very popular as a lot of our
teachers have very long commutes here in SoCal.

3) Each item has a book pocket with a card in it that people sign and file
in a box by author's last name.

We found that we needed the cards just so that we could occasionally follow
up. Many times people just forget they have the book and someone else wants
it (teachers browse the Excel list). Also, the cards allow us to track down
a missing disc when the last CD from a 9 CD set is missing and the current
listener NEEDS to find out how it all ends! :-) It has been great PR for us!
Our teachers love it. Doesn't take much effort on our part.

I do make it clear to teachers that I want good books--I don't want them
clearing off their old Readers Digest Condensed books or textbooks--I want
books they've enjoyed and want to share.

We have what we call the "Teacher Readers" which we keep on bookshelves in
my office - just so they are not mistaken by students as accessible.

Several years ago at Book Fair, we had a speaker who talked to the faculty
about good books for them to read that year. We decided to have everyone
interested give me $10.00 and I would order as many of those books as
possible and we could all share them. We process them through our database
and they are checked out just like other books. Through the years, we all
have donated our books and the collection has grown.

Parents also check them out. This collection is totally separate from our
professional collection which is available for teachers and parents as well.
