Where is it written that you have to put out the JUNK in the first place? I'm from a low SES community too and it galls me to see the kids spending money on pencils, erasers, posters (which get crumpled before they ever get home) and other junk. I solve the problem by refusing to sell it. In fact I tell the kids I'm not going to sell it because the fair is in the library and I'm a librarian and I want them spending money on books not stuff. It makes perfect sense to them. And to me. Granted, my profits aren't nearly as good but I feel much better about the entire endeavor. I also use the week prior to Book Fair to teach lessons about figuring the tax and rounding numbers. I will admit to having been at my school for 16 years and running one of the better library programs in my district so that let's me get away with things that others might not be able to.
