Dear Becky and All, I hear your frustration with AASL conferences being held during the school year. Still, I hope you will consider attending Annual in Anaheim this June to participate in pre-conferences and the school library-focused sessions that AASL is offering. Here's a link to the pre-conferences and other ticketed events: http://www.ala.org/ala/aasl/conferencesandevents/aaslannual/aasl08ticketeven ts.cfm Here's a link that specifies the sessions that will be offered: http://www.ala.org/ala/aasl/conferencesandevents/aaslannual/aaslprograms08.c fm For example, my colleague Debra LaPlante and I will be co-presenting "Maximizing Your Impact: Classroom-Library Collaboration for Teaching Information Literacy and Reading Comprehension Skills" on Saturday June 28 from 8:00 to 10:00. This interactive session is targeted to K-6 teacher-librarians who are looking for ways to partner with classroom teachers to integrate the new AASL standards into the reading curriculum. One advantage of attending Annual (besides that it's during the summer) is that you can also get involved in AASL's Affiliate Assembly and committee work. Networking and learning about what's going on in school libraries in other parts of the country can be vital to improving and advocating for your library program. (On a side note, there is an emphasis on author/illustrator book signings at Annual and the guest speaker programs offered by the various divisions are thought-provoking!) Hope to see you in Anaheim. From where I sit most school librarians are working during October. I know that I have a difficult time getting my district to let me off for a day or two for my state conference let alone an out of state conference. Have they ever considered moving to a month when we are not in school? Is there anyone else who would like to go but can't because their district won't give them them the time off, especially with most state confernces during the school year?
