I have learned that in the library and the rest of my life that a calm, measured
response helps me the most.

Anger is just not all that it is cracked up to be, so I allow it less and less.

Yes, the request was not "right." I wouldn't do it, and when I was younger it
would have steamed me up!! Today I feel like Allan. I just want to say, "No."

We are a segment that doesn't say NO easily, but often that is quite simply the
best answer. I love the part where I can now say "No, I cannot do that." It is so
simple and sublime. I don't even feel anger too much at work anymore.

  NO, is a doable response.

Today went really well UNTIL 3:30 PM when a third grade teacher walked up to me
with a typed sheet which I am quoting verbatim

"Could you help me locate some books on the following topics? Your assistance is
greatly appreciated! I need the books by tomorrow morning (4/2/08).

Book topics : hurricanes, Legos, Sun, Outer space, Pandas, Chimpanzees, Tigers,
Beta fish, Vietnam, Sharks, Cleveland, Grand Canyon, South Carolina, Raccoons,
Tornadoes, Sailboats, Ocean animals, Viperfish, Penguins, Cats/kittens, Mercury
(planet), Soldiers in Iraq, Lions, Hybrid cars, Horses, Black Labs and retrievers

I tried to discern what the plan was here. What are the expectations, how could we
teach the children to locate the books (since I have spent a lot of time doing
library skills covering this) her reply was that "it was too hard". I explained
that we are trying to teach research as a process, etc. etc. She just got steamed
with me and said to have my aide do this like last year and walked out.

Since I cover 3 elem bldgs. I won't be back there tomorrow. I left a note for my
part-time aide who has a full schedule of laminating (endless) and class book
checkouts saying that I guess this teacher expects us to work nights at school. The
teacher left the bldg. at 3:45. I stayed to finish up some other tasks and left at
4:30.

I know that she is NOT HAPPY with my suggestions and I am NOT HAPPY to do her
bidding.

Thanks for listening, since she didn't want to,
