Before I retired from my elementary school library position, I made it my business to remain busy all day even when I was not working with students in my fixed schedule. I made sure that staff and administrators knew that I was not sitting around all unscheduled periods eating bonbons or worse actually reading. That way when the annual budget crunch time came around, I would not be the one first person who they decided could be eliminated or get more assigned tasks. When they did cut our numbers, my parent volunteers who worked along side me for many years, came out in force to board meetings to demand the restoration of full time librarians in all our elementary schools. At my retirement party the Superintendent referred to me as the person who "singlehandedly" got full elementary librarians restored in the district. That's a nice way to be remembered even if it was a bit of an exaggeration.
