The practicum students who come to us have very specific assignments, and NO this
does not include the library. I have asked that students be allowed to have
practicum working with me in the library. I do teach all grade levels and my
lessons are cross-curricular. So far the answer has been NO.

I believe that I am a sales woman for librarianship. I grab those new teacher
people and show off our stuff!! If they come in asking for folktales, well they
get my passion for folklore and my best 5 minute speech. These teachers always
leave with more materials and ideas than they ever expected. Sometimes I even get
them to schedule some of their precious teaching time working with me team-teaching
in the library. It is a case-by-case situation. Oh yes, I try my best to make
sure my administrator know all this cool stuff happens, too!!

As an adjunct to this discussion, what theoretical and practical experiences
about the role of the
library and the LMS/ teacher librarian do your pre-service teachers have during
their courses?
Is there a compulsory element that requires them to plan and work with you, either
imposed by the
university or by your school?
Is their only exposure left to the pro-activity of the committed teacher librarian?

In this country, much is made of the fact that the mainstream, classroom-based
teacher is unaware of
the role and services of the teacher librarian because there is no formal
requirement to collaborate
with the teacher librarian on prac or internship so even our newest teachers can
remain in the dark.
However, some dedicated teacher librarians here have formed The Hub, specifically
aimed at advocacy
to have a fully qualified teacher librarian in every school in the nation
(http://hubinfo.wordpress.com/) and we have the ear of some powers-that-be that
might enable us to
address this.

So if you have either formal requirements (or dreams of what should happen) could
you share them?
We would like as many ideas as possible because you never know what might be
possible.
