I have this wonderful student who loves me to pick out some books for him to read. (Several students now just come to me and say "What should I read next." He must have told his parents, because I received this phone call from the father....... Hello, I am _, father of __. My wife is a teacher at (local elementary school). She is looking for a book to use at her school. I was wondering if you could help us? OF COURSE, I said yes, EVEN though at the moment I was watching the clock because I only had 40 min to COMPLETELY set up a bookfair before the first preview class came (I was double booked by the admin). I directed him to the SCHOOL LIBRARY website and walked him through how to look up a title on our Union catalog and how his wife could ask HER library assistant to ILL the book. He was thrilled to have the tools and information on how to do this. And that it was all right there with ease of access. I was THRILLED that a parent would even think to call to see if I could help them to find a book. Just had to share. AND to back this with the CHILDLIT/YA LIT class discussion... I am also seeing a lack of background knowledge of the books from new librarians. They know the Award books, a few classics, maybe a 100 titles between picture books and chapter books. But, unless they are readers themselves, they are prepared to do the teaching but lack how to fit a book to a student. I realize that it takes time, but it is not just the new teachers that are lacking knowledge of great books.JaKay Greer Teacher-LibrarianMiddle schoolAlbany, Oregonirismedia@msn.com _________________________________________________________________ Use video conversation to talk face-to-face with Windows Live Messenger. http://www.windowslive.com/messenger/connect_your_way.html?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_Refresh_messenger_video_042008 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
