I got some great ideas on what to use for this freshman orientation. I am putting them all in the hit. I will be using 3 or 4 of the ideas, and making them fit my schedule and what I have to work with. This is going to be a great day! Why don't you have a computer and projector set up with a VoiceThread account active. You can upload photos of the event or of the school and have Freshmen record their reactions, fears or hopes as they go by. Thank you to everyone who sent these great ideas! I am sure many of us will find them useful! How about an Internet search challenge to find something by viewing less than four website. Anyone who accomplishes this is entered in a prize drawing. A thought....have a short survey (Survey Monkey)that students could fill out online? What genres do you enjoy reading? How much reading of print magazines do you do? What kinds of things would you like to see in the library? Kind of generic, but it could offer some useful feedback as well. I have my freshmen do a short "scavenger hunt" to use our online databases, online catalog, etc. for freshmen orientation and have a survey as well. Please post any interesting responses you receive. Good luck! How about a computer with the library catalog. Have a scavenger hunt game that requires them to use the catalog. Give away candy and book marks. Have a new book display. Have a suggestion box so that incoming students can let you know what they're looking for in a library. Games come to mind! Maybe individually wrap several books in ways that suggest what the book is about. Whoever can guess the title of the book wins the book. You could create a game board with powerpoint, or if you have response units, you could create an activity using them. How about an Internet search challenge to find something by viewing less than four website. Anyone who accomplishes this is entered in a prize drawing. Maybe you could have a series of podcasts (or video) that talk about library procedures, give a tour, that sort of thing, set up on a laptop. Then students could select which ones they want to learn about.
