Hi all, Here are the responses I received. I will be using a combination of ideas. Thanks all. I just purchased a die cut of an open book from the company Accucut. It was $30 and can be used in a number of ways. I intend to make several and post students' photos on it. I'm not sure if I will award stars, etc. for certain genres read or ???. The die cuts can be decorated any way you see fit. The size I bought is 5" across, but they have a larger one for a little more $. I got it within a week of ordering from the company. I think it has a lot of potential for decorating. Christine Stanley librarian @ Flour Bluff Intermediate School cmstanley@grandecom.net Option 1 - If you have double doors that open--Can you get some large sheets (or a roll) of butcher paper or newsprint wide enough to cover each door? Staple a few of the sheets together (long enough to cover each door top to bottom). Trim the top sheets of each bundle in a curve to resemble pages of an open book, trim the side that will be next to the hinges so the door looks like the inside of the cover of an open book. Now glue all edges, eaxcept the stapled edges. Now tape each bundle over a door- lining up the stapled edges - if you can, and it won't interfere with locking the doors, curve the stapled edge around the door edge. so when the door is closed it looks like an open book. Attach letters to each door- "WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF BOOKS" - or your library's name. Option 2 -- If you have a single door :Cover the door to look like the cover of a book with dark paper. For the title of the book use your library's name. Toni Koontz Librarian St. Charles Preparatory Columbus, Ohio home: fussbgt@sbcglobal.net school: akoontz@cdeducation.org I had a flash of a thought: It's easy enough to make the standard outline frame of a book on the outside wall around the door, but how would you make the pages with text, yet still be able to get in and out? How about enlarging a page of text to fit the door (my library actually has two doors, so one could be the left page, and the other the right page, with the door divider being the gutter). BUT instead of leaving the text page as is, slice it vertically to within a few inches of the top of the door, and it will hang straight but with allow passage through the door, sort of like beads or crepe paper hanging down. To enlarge the page, you may need to either hand write it, or perhaps Kinko's can do some magic for you. They can enlarge things to a very big size, then even if it wasn't quite large enough, you could mount what you do have onto bulletin board paper, and then slice it bottom to top, stopping about 4 - 6 inches from the top. It would really last much longer if it were on fabric, too. Hmmmmmm. . . That's a fun idea --- I may even try it myself! Please post a hit for all of us curiosity seekers.
