I teach in a Title I school as well and was thoroughly disappointed in the
quality of books in my Table Top Fair last year from Scholastic. I have one
from Books Are Fun scheduled for this fall, so I will compare quality and
all. The books looked handled and aged for the most part. Some were
mark-downs the children could buy, but there still were a number of $20
items these children just cannot afford. Even though these are poor kids,
they deserve the opportunity to buy nice things they will cherish and
perhaps care for and reread time and again or share with family members.

When I was in a wealthier school and the rolling cases came, I was very
happy with everything Scholastic, but now I feel, for the children's sake, I
do need to reconsider-especially since the $30 will be taken off the top. If
I felt strongly about Scholastic, I would probably approach the sales rep
for reconsideration. However, after last spring, I just do not have the
"warm fuzzies" for the "Clifford truck" I used to have. They still sent a
lot of do-dads I did not put out. If Books Are Fun is more successful, I
will probably cancel Scholastic and deal with them.
