My entire budget comes from our Scholastic Book Fair. I am not impressed with the company and I have the same complaints that I have been reading about... they send a lot of JUNK for kids to spend their money on and too few decently priced books. We have over 47% poverty rate in our school. To add insult to injury ...my sales rep informed me after our last book fair that we could not have the same dates this coming year that we had been booking for well over 10 years ( my profit is aprox $3400) She informed me she had called me three times to confirm the dates but I was not available...not the truth. So here is what I have done, although probably not too professional... I called Scholastic last year and threw a hissy fit. I told them I wanted several boxes of books priced at $2.00 ( they sent them) I also told them I did not want any junk... if they sent it I would not display it. I just ordered extra erasers and pencils. This year I called my rep's boss and lleft a message about the unavailability of the dates for the fair and that my rep had lied about calling me to confirm. Yes, she called me within the hour and magically had the dates I wanted. Again this year, I will be a maniac about the $2.00 books and no junk. I have also been stocking up on pencils when I find them for a good price. I will sell them very cheaply to the little ones who come in with just a quarter to spend. Obviously, I am always on the look-out for another book fair company. They are subversive. You think they're just sitting there at the desk, all quiet and everything. They're like plotting the revolution, man. I wouldn't mess with them." I have not done one in YEARS and don't plan on any in the future. Why? Three reasons: the books are way overpriced, the "junk" sells much better, and the classrooms use Trumpet, etc. book clubs and the kids purchase the same books for a lower price there. The last time I did a book fair we didn't even make a profit! Too much hassle for me. When the book fair reps call I just tell them I'm not interested - that is if the office secretary has not already "fielded" the call for me. I ask her to take a message and then "somehow" misplace the information. The reps usually don't call back. Same goes with preview books. Way too much hassle for me. Kathie Epler Librarian Amanda E.
