I wrote to ask who was involved in RTI (Response to Intervention) at their schools. We're jumping in this year. Most of the responses mirrored my situation, the librarian was not involved, invited, or even mentioned. Now I must say that I think this oversight is just that, an oversight, not a snub. Of course, that's the problem, the collection and our expertise is either taken for granted or ignored. I plan to work on getting a place at the table. My goal is to change the mindset so that the collection (and by extension, me) becomes one of the primary resouces folks think of when curricular discussions begin. A long journey, but step one is now. Some folks were involved. Their replies follow: "My district began RTI last year. We had 2 "teams" and I served on one. Another "special's teacher" served on the other. The team got together and the classroom teacher presented the student's case, then we all made suggestions for how to help. I often helped by meeting with students individually on a bookwalk and prepared an individual list of books for them. I also kept a special eye on the kids when they came to the library and tried to assist and connect with them personally. I learned a great deal at the meetings." "I asked to be trained on the technology they will use at Tier 1 and Tier 2. I also house the Guided reading library so they come to me to talk about how to level the kids, how to teach reading in groups etc." Thanks to all for the interest.
