I would be tempted to respond that you are only authorized to reimburse the author
up to whatever limits your particular school division has established regarding its
per diem rate (which is undoubtedly far less than the expenses you have indicated.)
This individual is taking advantage and will continue to do so unless he or she is
called on this despicable behavior.

It is worth noting that in the future, I will certainly indicate this very
limitation in any future correspondence with potential visiting authors.

My two cents,

Perhaps "outing" the author would "fix" the problem. I think the author was quite
tacky and very inappropriate to do that to a school. I want to know who it was
because I don't want a visit.

I recently had an experience where a visiting author ate very
expensive meals during her visit. One meal costs $50.00 and the
other meal costs $60.00. Since I agreed to pay expenses, I was
obligated to reimburse the author. On the flip side of this coin, I
feel I was "taken for a ride!" I am now considering setting a per
diem amount when I have visiting authors / illustrators /
storytellers. I would discuss this with the person ahead of time
before signing a contract. Am I just being tacky and is the per diem
idea way off base? Has anyone else had a problem with expensive
meals during author visits? I would appreciate all thoughts and
comments.
