Can't it be wall-mounted up high enough to be out of the way in the cafeteria?
That way they would have to work at it to take it. You might have to purchase the
wall brackets. What about on the wall or a corner of the library?

I have a 3rd grade boy who is looking for a series to read on 3rd-4th

grade reading level that is based around science, uses science to solve

mysteries, etc. Any titles pop into mind?

Hello library lovers,

My school uses both the MAPs test (for lexiles) and the STAR test (for
younger kids). Do any of you know of a nice handout/process for converting
STAR scores into lexiles?

Subject: Target: Forensics piece

A student heard a piece in forensics (part of a farrago presentation)
that she referred to as "A poor woman's lament for her children". She
thought it was a story/narrative, perhaps set in the early 1900's, and
dealt with the woman's feelings about being poor and how it affected her
children. It was a serious/dramatic piece. Does this sound familiar to
anyone? It is not the lyrics by Eric Clapton or Cream. I have found
the Mill Mother's Lament by Ella Mae Wiggins, but we think she is
remembering something much longer and not a poem. Anyone have any
inspired ideas?

Subject: HIT (long) Faculty Librarian Cooperation

Here at long last is my hit. I planned to post it earlier=2C but I live in=
the neighborhood where the rabbi who was killed along with his wife and so=
many others in the Mumbai terrorist attacks grew up (our families are frie=
nds=2C and he and his siblings grew up with our kids). It's been a tough f=
ew days=2C but it's time to move on and bring some sense of normalcy back i=
nto our lives.
=20
I don't think an article on cooperation is going to be your answer. You ha=
ve some serious personal PR to do. I would start by going to the principal=
and gently explaining to her that you feel "left out of the loop" and requ=
est that you be given notice of events that involve the entire faculty=2C o=
r that deal with curriculum areas in which you might contribute some expert=
ise. I wouldn't be surprized=2C though=2C if she replied that you could re=
ad the notice in the lounge like anyone else. Since your working relations=
hip is already less than cordial=2C It's going to be very difficult to chan=
ge her perception of what you do.
=20
Do you have a close friend on the faculty? If so=2C ask that person to be =
your eyes and ears and keep you informed of meetings that you should attend=
. Once you start showing up and contributing in a meaningful way=2C they m=
ay start inviting you. It's also time to do some soul-searching. Is there a=
nything about you or your attitude that may have contributed to this situat=
ion? There must be some reason she feels the way she does. Maybe she rese=
nts the fact that=2C as a teacher=2C she had long hours of lesson preparati=
on and papers to grade=2C not to mention all the record keeping teachers ar=
e required to do each year. She probably has no idea that your job require=
ments are just as strenuous=2C however different they may be.
=20
Perhaps as a principal she will be involved in evaluating either your libra=
ry or your job performance. In either case=2C she's going to have to becom=
e more familiar with what you do.
=20
I'm lucky to have had a very good situation for the past 15 years and am lo=
oking forward to retiring after this year=3B however=2C I've had difficult =
positions in the past and this much I can tell you: nothing stays the same=
. The makeup of the faculty will change over time=2C and if your principal=
is ambitious=2C perhaps she will move on to a different position. All you=
can do is your best and try not to let the rest bother you too much.

Subject: especially non US schools

I am wondering how teacher prep time is covered in schools other than those
in the United States. Where I live teachers have a certain number of state
mandated hours of preparation time - 450 minutes per 2 week period or 45 minutes
a day. Those hours are covered by many configurations of classes - usually
art, PE, music, library, special languages etc. I am specifically wondering
how other countries resolve this dilemma. Are your teachers required to have a
certain number of hours for planning and prep? How much time and how is that
time covered? Also in my school all teachers on the same grade level all have
the same planning time. For example 9:15 to 10:00 am daily. Is this
standard practice? I'm not certain it is the most efficient use of our specials
teachers - among whom I belong.
