A HS social studies teacher is trying to find a title/author for this
one-act play. Here is a description.
The whole play takes place at the railroad station waiting area. A black
woman, waiting on "her side" is going to New York to convince her daughter
to come home. The daughter has asked for money as she is trying to make
it in the theater. The mother, encouraged by her other daughter, thinks
it's a pipe dream and that no one will give a black girl a chance. There
is a white woman sitting on "her side" who is going back to New York.
Somehow the two women strike up a conversation. The black woman tells the
white woman about her daughter and it comes out that the white woman is
involved with the theater. The white woman offers to help out the lady's
daughter and she is thrilled, until she realizes that the white woman is
offering the black aspiring actress a job as her maid. It ends with the
black woman writing her daughter a note of encouragement to follow her
dreams, puts the money and note in an envelope, mails it and goes home.
