I started a tradition the year our 3rd grade teacher adopted a child from China and bought a book about China for Bonnie's class to read. Now, when we have a new international student or foreign adoption student start school, I buy a book about the country that child is from. I also sometimes buy one to represent parents who are first generation from another country. We have a small school and a limited budget, so don't have a book about every country, but I try to make sure each child can read at least one book about their homeland. We have or have had families or students from China, Korea, Mexico, Japan, Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Columbia, Russia, Romania, England, and Botswana - the only one I couldn't find were lower level books about Sierra Leone and Botswana. The kids get a kick out of showing classmates pictures of things from their country of origin and their parents like that they're learning about where they come from.
