[LM_NET] HS: Need suggestion for Call of the Wild substitute

Hi, 

A student in an 8th grade accelerated English class and her mother do not want her 
to read Call of the Wild. She is very sensitive to violence against animals. The 
teacher is asking for suggestions for a substitute book that is at least 9th grade 
reading level but not too long, familiar to her, and deals with the theme of 
adaptation  for survival in order to have a parallel assignment. 

Swiss Family Robinson? OK, I suggested No Dead Dogs by Gordon Korman but only 
cynically. 

Any suggestions would be very helpful, Sara J
