Hello all: One of our staff members has a personal collection of purchased motion pictures on VHS tapes that he wants to copy to DVD so he can get rid of the originals. He has a gut feeling that he should keep the originals as a proof of ownership, should his right to the dvd copies be questioned. He contacted the copyright office (Library of Congress) and was told they are personal property and that he can do whatever he wants with them as long as he is not making a profit and that he may dispose of the originals in any manner he wishes, including giving the originals away after making the dvd copies. He still doesn't feel comfortable with this response and asked me to check with my listserv experts. The question: may he copy to dvd and purge or give away his originals? Thanks for your opinions....
