Thank you to everyone who responded regarding advertising playaways. I will certainly use these suggestions. Here are the responses. We put the boxes (empty) on the shelves where the book would go, then keep the playaway in the back, like they do at video stores. That way, students can see that the are there. Stand in the hallway as you listen to one. It will draw a lot of attention. I also made up a poster "Now Hear This" and listed a few titles. The response was like an avalanche: once it got rolling, it was impossible to stop! Add something in the daily announcements; do a display or bulletin board; get an article in school newspaper; ask teacher(s) to give you a few minutes one day to introduce the format to students -- show and explain but also give them a chance to read along and listen in small groups or pairs. I made a display that we keep on the front counter. Mine is a sheet of foamboard and a little square of foamboard for each book, with the book's cover on the square, velcroed to the big board. They peel off a little square and trade it for the Playaway. It lets them know what's in and out very easily. We put some in our display case that sits right outside the library... But I really think the most effective way is to just sling one around your neck and answer the question: "What is that????" ;) I advertised mine at the beginning of the year library orientation as "the only electronic device you can use on campus without breaking the student code of conduct!" Our student rules say no electronic devices at all, so this is a big deal. Kids really enjoyed tucking the player away with only the earbuds showing so a teacher would ask what they had, then flourishing the Playaway and saying "I'm legal!" Thanks again.
