My original request:
I'm working on a book order, and I'm enlisting your help. What books MUST
> I have in the library (grades 7-12, public school)? By MUST, I mean the
> popular and good books.

Many of you asked me to post a hit. I appreciate the input. I have most of these,
but I did find a few I was missing. And, some of them just seemed a bit low for a
junior high/high school library.

Thank you everyone!

Here are the responses I received:
My top must-haves are:
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
The Giver by Lois Lowry
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult

Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld .
Angel experiment series by James Patterson

Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick

By far the most popular books here right now are Stephenie Meyer's Twilight, New
Moon and Eclipse. They are rarely on the shelf!
Maximum Ride trilogy by James Patterson is also very popular.

Twilight, New Moon & Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer are popular
So are Uglies, Pretties, Specials, Extras by Westerfeld
The Maximum Ride books by James Patterson are also popular
I still have a group of 7th & 8th grade boys reading the Darren Shan / Cirque du
Freak books

I would refer to the YALSA/PPYA lists -- for both popular and good --- If an ALA
member, once can access the annotated lists; otherwise only the title and
authors. Our new lists are forthcoming after Midwinter!

Go Ask Alice
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
Monster by Walter Dean Myers
The Outsiders by Hinton
A Child Called It by Pelzer
Anything by Sonya Sones, Sarah Dessen, Nicholas Sparks, Stephen King, Darren Shan
All of the Laurie Halse Anderson books.
The First Part Last by Angela Johnson
  Whale Talk by Chris Crutcher

Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse by Stephenie Mayer
Peeps by Westerfield
Eregon and Eldest by Paulini
Great interest has happened since the release of the film The Golden
Compass, so you might want these books
Anything creepy and gross for the boys
And graphic novels are very popular among the boys

The House of the Scorpion by Farmer
Feed by M.T. Anderson
His Dark Materials Trilogy by Pullman
Garth Nix books, all of his series'
All of Tolkein
Philip Reeves' Series: The Hungry City Chronicles
Rick Riordan's Series: Percy Jackson and the Olympians
Francesca Lia Block
Chris Crutcher
Anthony Horowitz's Alex Rider Series
James Patterson's Maximum Ride Series

There's a good professional book for this called: BOOKS THAT DON'T
BORE'EM: Young Adult Books That Speak to This Generation by James
Blasingame , published by Scholastic.
It has lots of lists and recommendations and author interviews.
It would help you I think.
