Hi LM_Netters,

Here's the advice we're giving:

MLA does not provide any guidance yet for citing videos like the ones found
on YouTube (which are mostly video weblog-like posts). Selecting "Film or
video recording" as the citation type in NoodleBib does produce a result,
but seems more geared to an entire movie/film, where there is a year of
production
(rather than a specific day of posting), and the film potentially has a
producer, distributor, etc.

When we asked the MLA editorial staff about citing regular blog posts
recently (also not addressed in the Handbook, although we've had a "blog"
citation type available in NoodleBib for a while now, derived from other
examples and citation types), they indicated that it would be best to simply
treat a blog entry as a regular Web page. My feeling is that treating a
YouTube video post in this manner would also be appropriate, with a result
such as:

Norton, Robert. "How to Train a Cat to Operate a Light Switch." _YouTube_. 4
Nov. 2006. 7 Nov. 2007 <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vja83KLQXZs>.

As with the examples shown for sections 5.9.9b and 5.9.9c in the Handbook,
there is no need to include a statement indicating the "format" (e.g.,
"Video file") for online sound/video.

I was just pondering this this morning. This is an APA example that I'm
using at the moment:

Title [Video]. (date) Retrieved January 8, 2008, from http://www.
youtube.com/watch?v=etc.
