"Fic" is better than F, just like "Bio" is better than B, and "Ref" is better than R. It took me YEARS to realize it. The epiphany came when a librarian aide explained to me that the students instictively know that "Fic" means "Fiction." When they see "F" they don't instinctively complete the word. Similarly "Bio" nearly automatically completes to "biography" and "Ref" completes to "reference." How many times have you had a student look at you and ask, "What does B mean?" They very seldom, close to never, ask "What does "Bio" mean?" When I understood it, I wanted to change all the F's, and B's and R's to Fic, Bio, and Ref, of course. What a daunting task! But is really isn't such a chore. You can quickly transform them in the on-line catalog. Follett has a global change feature just for this necessity. And the catalog is the place where the students need to be thinking "fiction," "biography," and "reference." If they are standing at the shelves, surely they know which section they are in--because you have such good signage, of course. Then you just call up your vendors, request the change, and start putting the "right" designations on your new books. Your old items will be just fine, and they will gradually, over the years, leave your collection. You'll be helping your students with this little change. Additionally, tell your principal you've made the change to help your students--after you've done it. He or she will understand just enough of the change to be proud of the way you are thinking of your students and making library management decisions to help them. I received the following question from a colleague. Being a first-year media specialist, I thought I would refer it to the listserv: Could you find out from someone in the know (maybe you already know), what is the preferred cataloging for juvenile fiction....is it F or Fic? Which do you use? I am trying to standardize but don't know which is preferred. Your thoughts? Thank you! Valerie Boatwright Library Media Specialist A. R.
