Jeffrey asks: "If I was female and my name was, say, Marge, and I wore flowy and flowery dresses, would I be atop this ladder right now checking to see if this teacher's s-video cable is properly connected?" The answer is...it depends on the culture of the school. I have been in the aforementioned s-video situation (minus the flowy dress- not my style), and in a new, different school, as a woman I am viewed as mistress of the overhead projector, while male teachers are asked to fix "more evolved" tech needs. Mind you the I'm the only teacher in the building who used to teach technology and the only one using Web 2.0 in her classes. I find it frustrating and deal with it by politely letting the teacher know that I'm not an overhead specialist, then I refer her to our building's official Tech Assistant who happens to be a male teacher (He gets paid a stipend; I don't). I think this goes beyond gender. The bigger question is why don't teachers recognize us as educators first? I don't like that we have to advocate so much for ourselves, but instead of "wanting to die", why not use your perceived genetic super powers as leverage for making collaboration happen? :-) Laura Brooks Library Media Teacher Amerman Elementary School Northville, MI brooksla@northville.k12.mi.us "Unless someone like you cares a whole lot, nothing is going to get better.
